Licensing

All premises selling alcoholic liquor must be licenced. Obtaining a liquor licence involves an application to Licensing Court presided over by the High Bailiff or the Deputy High Bailiff.

A copy of the application must be served on the Chief Constable together with antecedents and character references relating to person applying for the licence. Police checks are then are carried out on the applicant and the police also inspect the premises to ensure in particular that there is appropriate safe storage and that the premises are suitable. Also, an up to date fire certificate must be produced to the court. Special training courses are put on at the Isle of Man College and new applicants are expected to attend a suitable course.

Special or occasional licences may be required for events such as weddings, parties or concerts and of course for events often held during TT week.

There are many adjournments at the licensing courts where matters have been overlooked. We ensure that everything has been considered and dealt with as far as possible well before the court date.
